Sankofa Talented and Gifted is an extraordinary environment that will provide all children, including twice exceptional students an environment where they can thrive and build on their strengths. We know a one-size-fits-all approach to education doesn’t work. Honoring unique differences is one of our highest values, which we demonstrate by empowering students to foster their innate curiosity, and promoting optimum learning by collaboratively, developing a personalized learning program for each student.
The vision of Sankofa Talented and Gifted is to provide a safe, rigorous, creative, dynamic environment to develop critical learners who think, communicate , socialize and produce according to their fullest potential. Our students are successful lifelong learners. Our school is helping to develop productive and contributing citizens with a strong sense of Identity, responsibility and connection to their immediate and world community.
We will create local access to global opportunity. Our educators are well versed in culturally responsive instructional practices, who have come together to support implementation of Sankofa Talented and Gifted . Families can choose optimal
schedules that allow them to maximize their learning in ways that are supportive to their family structure and community involvement classroom instruction with online learning extensions and
hands on community based learning opportunities. Our school model will seek to to address the significant disparity in learning opportunities among underserved students across several counties and states. In order to effectively address
the barriers described above, we feel it is necessary to mount a sustained effort from 3rd grade through high school graduation. . . The school will target students that are impoverished, academically behind grade level standards, and many with untreated or undertreated mental health issues
Sankofa Talent and Gifted was originally established in response to urban and suburban school districts failure to educate African American children and children with disabilities effectively. Over the last 7 years there has been an abundance of evidence that African American children across all socioeconomic statuses in both urban and suburban areas are not accessing educational resources at the same rate of their European peers.
History of our name
Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that translates as "Go back and get it" (san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take) and also refers to the Asante Adinkra symbol represented either with a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back. Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, "Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," which translates as: "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten."The sankofa bird has also been adopted as an important symbol in an African-American and African Diaspora context to represent the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future.
